How does indoor air quality affect my family, and what can I do to improve it?

Some problems such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, and fatigue show up fairly quickly. Most of these problems are caused by particles in the aid that you breathe and the various types of mold present here in Florida (although most molds are not harmful, many people have allergic reactions to them).

There are 3 basic remedies for poor indoor air quality:

1. Control the source: eliminate aerosols, paints, and thinners, check the formaldehyde content of new furniture prior to purchase, make sure you do not have water leaks that can lead to mold growth.

2. Improve ventilation: open doors and windows whenever possible, make sure bath and stove fans are in proper working order.

3. Improve air filtration and purification: All American A/C & Heating offers a full range of high efficiency (up to MERV 16) air filters, ultraviolet light assemblies, and duct cleaning and sanitizing.

What exactly is an ultraviolet light, and what are the benefits to having one?

Ultraviolet light kills mold, viruses, and bacteria by destroying their DNA, thus preventing them from reproducing. This improves the air quality in your home, which is important because homes are more tightly insulated today (due to stricter building codes), and we spend so much of our time indoors. An ultraviolet light, properly installed near the cooling coil, can help stop the spread of viruses (like flu bugs) among your family.

What are MERV ratings and filters, and how does a higher rating help me?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The higher the rating, the greater the ability of the filter to remove the smaller particles of duct and microbes from the air that you breathe. Standard fiberglass ‘throwaway’ filters have MERV ratings of 2 or 3. MERV ratings of 8 can filter up to 30% of particles, and ratings of 13 can filter up to 80%. All American A/C & Heating offers several filtration options, including the Lennox Healthy Climate with a MERV 16 filter that captures over 95% of particles.

How can I tell if I have a problem with indoor air quality in my home?

All American A/C & Heating can place an indoor air monitor in your home for 48 hours that will measure temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, and airborne particles. The device stores the readings and transmits them to an independent third party which will issue a comprehensive report. Our indoor air quality expert will review the report with you and make any necessary recommendations. Click to Contact Us for monitor installation.

I change my filter every month. Is there anything else that should be done to keep my system cooling and heating?

Like cars, air conditioners need regular tune-ups in order to run properly. Decreased efficiency, high utility bills, and premature replacement are the results of lack of maintenance. The cost of a maintenance agreement is recovered quickly in the savings on your monthly electric bill, as well as in reduced repair costs. In the event that your system does need repair, our Preferred Service Customers receive a discounted flat rate price. All American A/C & Heating has been offering preventative maintenance agreements for over 25 years and is the leader in this area.

What is the difference between variable speed and regular air handlers, and what are the benefits to a variable speed unit?

A variable speed air handler (indoor unit) features a variable speed blower, which allows the unit to cool or heat your home with a varying flow of air. This increases comfort be reducing uneven temperatures in the home, lowering operating noise, and saving money on you electric bill. A variable speed air handler also greatly reduces humidity and can remove up to four times the amount of water as a conventional air handler.
